Description

Silica aerogels also known as "Blue Smoke" or "Frozen Smoke " is the lightest known solid material, and so far the best insulation materials. It contains nano-sized pore structure(100nm), and has low density(1~500kg/m³), low-k(1.1~2.5), low thermal conductivity(0.013~0.025w/(m.k)), high porosity (80~99.8%) and high surface area (200~1000 m²/g), etc.. Silica aerogels has shown the unique characteristics in mechanical, acoustical, thermal, optical and many other fields, and it has broad prospects and great applications in the aerospace, military industry, transportation, electrical appliances, petrochemical, electric power, metallurgy, construction, clothing and other fields.

Principle

Principle of Thermal Insulation for Aerogels:

The diameter of pores in aerogels is in nano grade, which is close to or even smaller than the air molecule' s meanfree path (70nm), as a result, the thermal convection vanished which results in a low thermal conductivity.

The high porosity of the material means a large number of pore walls which reflect thermal radiation, therefore, reduce the thermal transport to its limit.

The path of thermal convection in solid is along the pore walls, thus, the long pore walls lower the thermalconduction.
